Know the difference - Theme vs style elements.
Knowing the difference between a theme, style elements and a colour palette is important. The aesthetic feel and look of your wedding hinge on the theme or colour palette you choose. Either option is enhanced further by style elements. The theme reflects and communicate your personality and the mood of your wedding.
Colour palette theme: orange and grey
The big question is …
How do you want your wedding day to feel? How can you coordinate your ideas into an overall idea that is balanced, aesthetically pleasing and resonates with you?
Remember to go with a theme that speaks to you and represents you and your partner, regardless of what other people thing or what commercial outlets are recommending.
There are two key steps:
1] planning [quick recap]
Brainstorm overall must have for the day [4 – 6 things]
See July blog: Wedding venues
Set budget
Set guest numbers
Brainstorm the theme
Choose venue, etc., etc..
2] choose between a theme [with style elements] or a colour palette [with style elements]
A wedding theme is ….
A theme is a specific subject, idea, style or aesthetic that your wedding is based on.
It can be general e.g.: beach or very specific e.g.: 1950’s or Art Deco or Steam Punk. And while colour is a part of a theme it isn’t the focus.
Examples of themes:
Victorian, whimsical, rural / country, beech, vintage, deconstructed luxury, rustic, romantic, alternative, boho, Art Deco, Steam Punk, Retro, cultural.
Colour palette theme is ….
A colour palette is a set of specific colours that work together cohesively based on shades and hues to create the theme.
A classic example of a colour palette wedding is pastel.
Other examples include monochrome or blue or gold or white and black or blue or red.
And style elements are …
Style elements are added to your theme for an overall aesthetic appeal. They are the artistic extras that coordinate your whole idea.
Take a rustic theme for example. You style your wedding with elements that reflect this e.g.: hay bales, wooden furniture, old milk cans, wooden boxes, old suitcases, black boards, candles, horse cartwheels, dried flowers, strings of star lights.
You may want to add other elements that reflect whimsical, vintage or autumn aesthetics..
